Opinion: Video Cards a Collectible, Not a Trading Card.

Video card products from Upper Deck and Panini are meant to spur interest in the hobby, taking their products to a new dimension. And well they might.

But that doesn’t make them a trading card. It makes them a collectible. Like a McFarlane, a plaque, an autographed baseball.

A poll on Beckett currently suggests that 80% of responders view the Upper Deck Evolution product as something other than a trading card, and the video of Beckett’s guys doing a video interview at a Dallas store suggests they feel the same. Even with Beckett’s guys there, and the unstated suggestion of positivity around the product, the response is lukewarm, kind of like when someone who looks just o.k. in a new shirt says “How do I look in this new shirt.”

“Nice,” we all respond, as the lack of a more overtly positive response says more.

Again, we’re happy to have innovation and more value in packs. Keep these video cards coming as a premium to what the box already delivers…. like a redemption for an autograph.

But let’s not confuse these with a trading card.
